Please join us in welcoming Sarah Burwell to the PFLAG Portland Board

Sarah’s journey with PFLAG began in 2018 when she was developing a culturally responsive human services program for the LGBTQ+ community and reached out to PFLAG for support. At the same time, a close family member was coming out, and the care and encouragement PFLAG provided helped her family navigate this new chapter with compassion and understanding.

Sarah’s passion for advocacy began as a child in the early 1990s. She took part in protesting the Oregon Citizens Alliance initiative, which sought to amend the state constitution to block anti-discrimination laws protecting LGBTQ+individuals.

With a long career dedicated to human services, Sarah has devoted both her professional and personal life to advocating for vulnerable and overlooked populations. She holds a degree in Criminology and Criminal Justice from Portland State University, giving her a strong academic foundation and practical insight into the complex challenges of human services work.

A two-time cancer survivor, Sarah approaches adversity with resilience and strength. These personal experiences have deepened her empathy and commitment to making a positive impact on the lives of others.

Beyond her professional life, Sarah is passionate about social justice and is a proud mother, wife, and dog lover. She enjoys cooking and sharing meals and sweets with family and friends, as well as hiking, traveling, and embracing moments of lighthearted fun. Her rich and fulfilling personal life reflects her dedication to family, community, and resilience.
