An elected official who understands the joy of raising a transgender child and a parent’s determination to protect them
We are so excited about this month’s featured guest speaker, state Representative Zach Hudson, who represents House District 49 (Troutdale, Parkrose, and Gresham).
Father of a transgender son, Hudson speaks openly about the importance of supporting the trans and nonbinary community. In 2023, after another state legislator made disparaging comments, Hudson issued a formal response on the House floor:
“Let’s be clear,” Hudson said, “Acceptance of trans and nonbinary people does not cause confusion. You want to know what is confusing for a child? For them to think:
“I feel different, but I don’t dare tell people. What will they think of me? If I tell people who I really am, will I be safe?
“That’s confusing. You know what is not confusing at all? To know: My parents love me. My teachers and peers accept me. There’s nothing wrong with me.”
Come meet Representative Hudson at our September 27th Chapter Meeting at First United Methodist Church, 1838 SW Jefferson St., just south of Providence Park. This gathering will double as our Annual Meeting, when the PFLAG Portland community will hear annual reports from our chapter president and treasurer as well as look ahead at the exciting work to come.
The annual meeting is also when the PFLAG members in good standing vote on a slate of candidates to serve on the chapter board. Our chapter is funded totally by donations. You can make a one-time gift or contribute monthly, beginning at $10, using the Donate/Join button on the website. Donations of $35 or more make you a voting member. https://pflagpdx.org/donate/
